Blair + Blake | A New Orleans French Quarter Elopement

Although Blair has converted to a West Coast girl for quite a few years now, New Orleans and the magic it encompasses runs richly through her veins. In true New Orleans fashion, the spirit woven through the weekend was nothing short of a non-stop party in The Big Easy.

“Dear America,
I suppose we should introduce ourselves: We're South Louisiana...I suppose we should introduce ourselves: We're South Louisiana...You probably already know that we talk funny and listen to strange music and eat things you'd probably hire an exterminator to get out of your yard.  We dance even if there's no radio. We drink at funerals. We talk too much and laugh too loud and live too large and, frankly, we're suspicious of others who don't.”

― Chris Rose, 1 Dead in Attic: Post-Katrina Stories

Although Blair has converted to a West Coast girl for quite a few years now, New Orleans and the magic it encompasses runs richly through her veins. Blair grew up on the outskirts of New Orleans, and for over the fifteen years I’ve called her best friend, her love for this city has always been a deep part of who she is. It was no surprise to me when she called to tell me of her plans to show her West Coast friends a taste of Nola for her wedding weekend. In true New Orleans fashion, the spirit woven through the weekend was nothing short of a non-stop party in The Big Easy.

Blair met Blake in the most pleasantly unexpected way on a cruise several years ago and I couldn’t have picked a more perfect match. From the ways they joke together to the ways they lift one another up in support, it’s been so beautiful to watch someone fill her soul in such a precise manner.

Here’s a little peek at their wedding weekend…

Private Tuscan Villa Elopement

“We take photos as a return ticket to a moment otherwise gone. We take photos to recall - with greater vibrancy - those experiences that have shaped and made us. We take photos to bridge distance and shorten time, to lend legacy to the little things and life to the forgotten. And we take photos to feel like artists on a Tuesday – and storytellers on a Sunday.”

It was so much fun to photograph the vision of Anne-Laure of From Italy, With Love Weddings on this romantic elopement at Villa Barberino, a private Tuscan Villa with rich Florentine history dating back to the thirteenth century.

New Orleans Elopement at Race + Religious | Alison + Scott

Alison and Scott got married at Race + Religious, a wedding and events venue in New Orleans, culturally rich in decor and ambiance that exudes an eclectic expression of the city. Though they currently reside in Los Angeles, Alison and Scott are both akin to our ole' girl Nola, as they lived seasons of life here that forever imprinted on their hearts.

In my initial phone conversation with Alison, she was so intentional communicating her desire that the person she chose to document the day understand and connect with her and Scott enough to capture their essence.  I immediately appreciated her hopes for more than just a pretty collection of photographs, but also, hiring a person to connect with the emotion, aesthetic, and happenings of the day in a way that would most accurately depict their world together.

Even then, I hadn't but a small inkling of just how aligned our visions of purpose, connection, and culture actually are to one another.  It wasn't until I spent the entirety of the quiet, joyful minutes of the wedding day with Alison and Scott that I fully grasped a hearty dose of who they are and a little glimpse into what life, love, and joy mean to them.

Here's a little peek into the Spring day in which they vowed to spend the rest of entirety encouraging, loving and forgiving, learning and laughing with one another...

Alison and Scott got married at Race + Religious, a wedding and events venue in New Orleans, culturally rich in decor and ambiance that exudes an eclectic expression of the city.  The roots of New Orleans run deep through the venue, from the bricks dried out of clay from the Mississippi River to the and uniquely pieced together artwork and furnishings .

As Alison was getting ready, Scott was enjoying the afternoon relaxing in the side cottage on the grounds of the venue with their son, Oscar.

As I arrived to start photographing that day, Alison pulled me to the side.  She told me that she would be taking a few moments of quiet time before she slipped into her dress to nurse Oscar.  She asked if I would snap a shot or two for her to remember.  In that moment, a feeling so beautifully intense, yet calming came over me, as I knew I had just been tasked the opportunity to artistically and authentically document Alison's ambience that day in such a breathtaking way.

There were several moments during the day when I really got to quietly observe Alison in such an organic way.  Without the hustle of anyone needing to primp, prime, curl, or ask anything of her at all, Alison took a few moments to sit with her baby boy and soak in the big, genuine emotion of her world on that day in March.

During this time I learned that Alison runs a company where she serves as a postpartum doula, where she nurtures families and helps them transition during postpartum.  Naturally, with all of the mamas and different journies that have been finding their way in front of my camera lately, I was fascinated.  If you too find this fascinating, you should hop on over to Alison's site to read more of how she left her role as a public relations executive in the entertainment industry to tend to new mamas postpartum.

Alison lost her mother about 13 years ago.  In our initial conversation, she shared with me how important photographs that she still has, both formal and candid, of her mother are to her.  Although her mother was not physically present on that day, the ways she was spoken about and intertwined throughout made me feel like I knew a little about the person she was.  From Alison to her sister to her nieces, there was no shortage of genuine, educated, and compassionate ladies around; undoubtedly some qualities inherited from their mother.  After Alison was dressed, her sister pinned a pin on her dress as they shared a moment together in remembrance of her that day.

Another component of Alison + Scott's day that I found to be so authentic was the Ketubah they signed prior to the ceremony.  A Ketubah is a Jewish marital contract that outlines the commitment a couple shares to honor one another.  I find it to be an eloquently worded document that serves as a reminder of the commitment being entered into during a nuptial ceremony.

New Orleans Elopement at Race & Religious

The words from the Ketubah were so beautiful to me that I asked Alison if it would be ok for me to share them here:

"We hereby pledge to trust, respect and support each other throughout our married life together.

We shall always endeavor to be open and honest, understanding and accepting, loving and forgiving, and loyal to one another.

We hereby promise to work together to build a harmonious relationship of equality.

We shall respect each other's uniqueness and help one another to grow to our fullest potential.

We will comfort and support each other through life's sorrows and joys.

Together, we shall create a home filled with learning, laughter, and compassion, a home wherein we will honor each other's cherished family traditions and values.

Our promise to each other, in the presence of loving family and friends, is valid and binding."

Though they currently reside in Los Angeles, Alison and Scott are both akin to our ole' girl Nola, as they lived seasons of life here that forever imprinted on their hearts.  From frequent visits to Jazz Fest or just to catch up with family, New Orleans is very much a part of their lives.  And because no New Orleans wedding feels authentic without a celebratory Second Line and brass band, The Storyville Stompers led Alison, Scott, and guests ceremony with some classic New Orleans tunes.

Summer Elopement in Cancun | Alli + Steve: Mexico Wedding Photographer

"Now that I can talk to you from age forty, I can tell you--don't worry, it's all good. Life is the same, only better. Never perfect, never settled, never figured out, but ever beautifully flowing." - Garance Dore, Love Style Life

As I spent the week in Mexico laughing, dancing, and conversing with Alli and Steve's nearest and dearest friends, it filled me with so much joy to be able to spend so much genuine time getting to know and love those who support them the most. I've known Alli since college, and without a shadow of a doubt, she's deserving of the abundance of love and joy that is present in this season of her life. Alli is one of the most thoughtful, selfless, and positive humans I've ever had the pleasure of calling a friend, and after spending the week watching Steve completely and utterly dote on her and speak on the qualities he adores in her, I felt just how genuine the respect the two of them carry for one another is.

Alli and Steve eloped for a destination wedding in Cancun at Dreams Playa Mujeres Resort. This was my first time in Cancun and from the resort to the locals, food to the gorgeous sights, it was one of my most favorite trips, to date. In a blog post soon, I'll post about the trip and personal adventures, specifically, so stay tuned! For now, enjoy these dreamy photos of their elopement!

Historic Uptown New Orleans Wedding: Julie + Michael | New Orleans Wedding Photographer

Do you know the origins of the wedding party? According to tradition, only an unmarried woman could be a maid of honor, and only the brother, best friend, or father of the groom could be the best man. The original purpose of the bridesmaid and the best man was to aid in the capture of the bride, get her to church on time, and keep any hostile family members away!

The “best” in best man refers to his skill with a sword, should the need arise. His purpose was as a backup to the groom in case he had to resort to kidnapping his intended bride away from disapproving family members.

Once the flower girl’s role was not simply to spread petals down the aisle, but to protect the bride from the Devil with her shield of virginity. Today, the ring bearer can be a girl, boy, or even a dog!

Now that you're educated on a few fun facts of the origins of the wedding party, I hope you enjoy a few photos from Julie and Michael's stunning classic, Southern Spring wedding at The Elms Mansion in Uptown New Orleans.

Dreamy Louisiana Plantation Wedding | Krystal + Nick: New Orleans Wedding Photography

"The heart is not like a box that gets filled up; it expands in size the more you love." This is a quote taken from the movie Her but reminded me so much of the capacity for love Krystal so clearly possesses and exudes.  From her positive attitude to the souls she surrounds herself, she is comprised of so much love and light.

Nothing I could say in this blog post though could portray more accurately Krystal's aura or Nick's admiration for her more than the words he wrote her that morning...

"Krystal, how do I even begin to express the way I feel about you into words? Just know that the length of this letter and the simplicity of words do not reflect the true meaning of my love for you. I wanted to take the time to explain some simple words I say to you all of the time, I love you.

I. When I say I, I mean all of me. It's everything I've got; everything about me. My last dime, my last ounce, my last second, will be for you. I put everything I've got behind that first word.

I promise to offer the best of me for the rest of my life."

To me it's that word in the phrase that connects us. Everything I've got connecting with everything you've got. Love is everything in this marriage. No matter what we face, we've got to face it together, and build everything. I feel like we can take on the world with our love."

No matter what you feel, think, or say about yourself, just know that I will love it all. You are the most beautiful person I have ever met.

You have an amazing heart that pours love for not just me, but for everyone close to us.

You are super gorgeous. I probably poke my chest out when you are on my arm. It's just subconscious. You'll have to get used to it. I'm proud of you.

You know how to take care of me and you know how to bring the best out of me. I love that you know me so well."

New Orleans Terrell House Wedding | Marlo + Rachel: New Orleans Destination Wedding Photographer

Back when arranged marriages were the norm, couples were generally kept apart and not allowed to see each other before the ceremony actually took place. In the event that the bride was undesirable, the groom may have wanted to call off the wedding. When you consider the purpose of arranged marriages (think: political alliances, securing land and wealth, keeping specific families in power, etc.), it would be fairly embarrassing and shameful to the family should the groom be given the chance to change his mind. So, as a result, the groom and bride were forbidden to see each other prior to the ceremony. This is in keeping with the same purpose of the bride having a veil as well. Nowadays, the tradition has simply carried over and the meaning has changed significantly. Some consider it bad luck (amounting to purely superstition), while others think it simply makes the event more special and exciting.

Marlo and Rachel chose to spend the day getting ready WITH one another. While they had separate bedrooms where they spent time among close friends, they soaked in various moments and sentiments of the day together, as well. Seeing the two of them enjoy such a monumental day unfold with one another was like a huge gust of fresh, cool air on a hot summer day.

Christmas Cheer at Destrehan Plantation Mule Barn | Megan + Jordan: New Orleans Wedding Photographer

"You are the finest, loveliest, tenderest, and most beautiful person I have ever known--and even that is an understatement." - F. Scott Fitzgerald

Megan and Jordan booked me quite some time ago. While lengthy engagements aren't the norm for wedding photography bookings, I absolutely soaked in the time that gave me to truly get to know the two of them. After two engagement sessions and about two years of planning, watching them say "I do" truly felt like I was watching close friends.

Megan possesses the most gentle, radiant soul–one that just gleams to everyone she touches. After having spent some time with them already, I am constantly in awe of the respect and nurturing affection for one another Megan and Jordan possess in the most refreshing of ways. Gentle, kind, and so clearly ready to spend the rest of their lives with no one else but one another.

Together for almost a decade, Annie and Reice tied the knot in the most dreamy 138-year old chapel on the bay in Fairhope, Alabama. With the windows open to the sounds of the nearby water, perfect Fall weather, and succulents draping ever-so-softly over the two large wooden doors that make up the entrance of the church, we laughed, cried, and watched as they said their vows with the most full hearts.  After just short of nine years together, Reice proposed to Annie in February of this year.  Annie is my cousin, so I’ve had the pleasure of watching these two grow into adulthood together, and I absolutely couldn’t be more elated for this season of their lives.

Annie and Reice did not want to see one another before the wedding; however, they did want to exchange letters and have a quiet moment together among the hustle and bustle of the day. My most favorite part of their day was as they were reading their letters. Annie began to cry proceeded by the biggest grin that covered her face. When I asked her what made her cry she said, "Reice told me we could have pizza tomorrow." Pizza, my friends. I'm pretty sure it's what keeps the sanity in many relationships.Annie + Reice Wedding

A Waterfront Wedding at Abita Roasting Company | Heather + Ryan: Mandeville Wedding Photographer

Soft, considerate, optimistically full of life and love, this is every bit of how I would describe the aura that Heather gives off. Her smile shines and her soul glows and there’s not a question in my mind as to why Ryan chose her to spend the rest of his days.

Heather and Ryan chose to get married at Abita Roasting Company on the waterfront in Madisonville, LA, for an intimate, yet lively Thursday evening ceremony among their closest friends and family. Heather planned her entire wedding in just over a month, and GUYS…I cannot tell you how much love there was surrounding the two of them. While I love a meticulously thought-out wedding soiree, I’ve been girl crushing HARD lately on a few smaller, more intimately planned weddings.

We watched them laugh. We watched them cry. We watched them dance the night away with the most important souls in their lives, and it was beautiful…Heather + Ryan Vial Wedding

Heather wrote Ryan a letter that he read immediately before their first look and it was the first moment I saw just how much Ryan adores every bit of her being. The two of them had a considerable amount of time together to soak in one another and the events unfolding. It always bums me out when my couples have such a stress-filled, jam-packed wedding day that they don't get time to simply soak in one another for a solid moment, so I'm so overjoyed that we had so much time for this.

New Orleans Wedding | Bailie + Brody: Immaculate Conception Church + Southern Oaks Plantation

I've known Bailie for quite some time. In fact, I photographed her senior portraits several years ago. This fact alone is kind of mindblowing and beautiful to me as a business owner. Nonetheless, Bailie and Brody's entire journey together has been so breathtaking to watch. Bailie and Brody are the type of couple whose story just unfolds so naturally. One of my favorite things about working with Bailie and the entire sentiment that surrounded her day is that her focus, seemingly effortlessly, remained entirely on Brody. While she had stunning details and venues, from the planning to the execution of the day, she was calm, collected, and focused on soaking in the love of those around her—and most importantly, the covenant between her and Brody.

The Roosevelt has a dark, elegant feel. I had so much fun playing with this aesthetic and incorporating it into Bailie and Brody's day.

Hands down, this photo above of Bailie's dad was my favorite photo captured that day. As Preston and I were walking back from capturing some portraits of the groomsmen outside, we noticed Bailie's dad sitting alone, quietly having a beer and a moment to himself in the downstairs bar of The Roosevelt. With all the chaos a wedding day brings, I loved that he just had a moment to himself, perhaps to soak in the moment in which he was about to hand off his first baby girl into matrimony.

This is my second most-loved photo captured that day. Another quiet moment where Bailie and her girls took a few minutes to reflect and pray before heading out into the packed church.

Social Media's Out for Summer: Why I'm Taking a Partial Social Media Hiatus

"I'm sure no one ever thinks about it...but these snapshots are our little stand against the flow of time.  The shutter is clicked, the flash goes off...

And we've stopped time. If just for the blink of an eye.

And if these pictures have anything important to say to future generations, it's this: I was here. I existed. I was young and I was happy...

and someone cared enough about me in this world, to take my picture."

If you've seen the movie One Hour Photo starring Robin Williams, you may remember this quote. Watching the movie again recently, the words got me like a jab straight to the gut. But perhaps not in the way you might think. While the words did resonate the sentiment that photographs are ever-so-important, it resonated another sentiment even more. One of disconnecting in this world we live of C-O-N-S-T-A-N-T connection. Taking time to breath and to be present, without sharing every move we make in hopes of "likes" and followers.

I think things in the social media world have evolved at such a fast pace, that we sometimes don't even realize how much it's effected the ebbs and flows of our lives, our emotions, and our relationships. While I absolutely CHERISH social media for it's ability to connect us with the outside world, I think most of us can agree in this age of DAILY Facebook spats, that it's both a blessing and a curse.

I am ever-so-grateful for the parts of social media that have allowed me to expand my mind and my relationships with thoughts and people that I never before would have been able to encounter in the same ways--or on the same levels. However, I think we can all agree that the "Keeping up with the Joneses" and the Facebook aggression on topics like vaccinations, political debates, and parental critiques are at an all-time-high enough to make an onlooker sick to the stomach.

SocialMediaBreak

So, what am I getting at?

Well, after much debate (and fear)--as social media does drive an inherent part of my business--I've decided to take a little hiatus from Facebook and blogging. It's VERY semi-permanent, but I truly believe a break from the constant chatter to NOT document every move I make and instead observe the real-life happenings around me is essential for growth and development.

With that being said, I WILL still be present on Instagram and you can follow me @kalinorton. I'm not sure exactly what date I'll be back on Facebook and blogging, but it will likely be around mid-August. When I do return, my hope is to share with you any insight and growth that occurred in my absence.

While this step was a little scary for me, as blogging twice a week has become such a vital part of my business, I truly believe this break is necessary. After all, the scariest things usually birth the best transformation, right?

In the meantime, if you'd like to reach out or connect with me, you CAN still do so via email, Instagram (@kalinorton) and Snapchat (@kalinorton).

Happy Summer, friends!

Soft Spring Wedding at Vintage Court | Anika + Stan: Covington Wedding Photography

Undoubtedly, Anika and her mother dreamt of this day for quite some time. The two of them brought together a vision of the most magical fairytale-like Spring wedding, complete with every detail right down to the labels on the champagne. From the ornate detailing on her shoes to the vine covered walls of Vintage Court, every inch of detail in the day was simply picturesque. And Stan. Ah, can we talk about Stan? His genuine love and adoration for his bride was palpable--I'm truly not sure that there's anything she could ask of him that he wouldn't do. From the picture perfect details to the love and support of friends and family that seeped into all crevices of the day, I'm positive that it felt like a fairytale come true to Anika and the most kick-ass party to Stan.

Classy Baton Rouge Back Yard Wedding | Jennifer + Kurt: Baton Rouge Wedding Photographer

As an artist, when you meet other like-minded creatives who are passionate about well, their passion, it pumps you UP. It breathes life into your bones and ignites a fire for creating and collaborating in your soul. Jennifer is one of those people. She is immensely talented creating artistry on a head of hair like it's no one's business. I've collaborated with her on shoots in the past and her talent, and moreso, her desire to perfect that talent for her craft leaves me speechless. As Jennifer's wedding details came together, she left me equally as dumbfounded for appropriate words to articulate my awe for her eye. There was not a single detail unturned throughout the day. From designing her own dress and the dresses her maids wore, to the candle lattice covering the pool, and the lantern release at the reception--she creatively transformed her parents' beautiful countryside back yard property into a soiree unmatched.Jennifer + Kurt WeddingJennifer + Kurt WeddingJennifer + Kurt Wedding Jennifer + Kurt WeddingJennifer + Kurt Wedding

Can we talk about even how lovely the bangle bracelet is that she wore. I love the subtle engraving of her and Kurt's wedding day. Soft whites, a one-of-a-kind Vogue-esque dress. Drools.Jennifer + Kurt WeddingJennifer + Kurt WeddingJennifer + Kurt Wedding

One of my favorite moments of the day was when Jenn walked out to see her girls after she was fully dressed. There were tears, there were laughs, and mostly, she realized just what was about to happen. So much beautiful emotion filled that room.Jennifer + Kurt WeddingJennifer + Kurt WeddingJennifer + Kurt Wedding

Kurt is the cool, calm, and collected type. When I got to him, he was so ready to see his beautiful bride. We actually rode out...FAR OUT...into a field for their first look. Seriously. We got on a Rhino, which is essentially a souped-up golf cart, and went through some crazy ditches to get to a special spot Kurt and Jennifer had picked out. I laughed so much during that ride that I think I cried my makeup off. Jennifer + Kurt WeddingJennifer + Kurt Wedding Jennifer + Kurt Wedding Jennifer + Kurt Wedding

An Ormond Plantation Wedding | Courtney + Tom: New Orleans Wedding Photographer

They met when Courtney spent a year studying abroad in England, on a random night that she wasn’t even planning on going out. Consequently, it was also a night that Tom and his friends had troubles catching a bus into town and he too, did not think he’d end up where he was that night. But as the story goes, they met that night, spent the rest of her year there together, and the rest is history… As I arrived to the plantation on that Saturday morning in April, I could tell nerves were a little high for Courtney and Tom. Not in an overt type of way, but in a minuscule, very subtle way that I could see was much different than the last time I spent time with the two of them together. As we spent a couple of hours before the first look, I noticed this demeanor in the two of them, however, the S-E-C-O-N-D the they saw one another for the first time during the first look, it was as if the entire universe shifted and the love between them was palpable. A Romantic Affair at Race + Religious | Kayla + Charlie: New Orleans Wedding Photographer

When photographing weddings, one thing that always makes me just the teensiest bit sad is how little time the bride and groom actually get to spend together on a day carved out to celebrate them. For Kayla and Charlie's day, this was not the case at all. It filled my heart with so much joy to see just how much the two of them were truly grounded in one another throughout the day--from every detail, gift, and moment they were together, it was almost as if no one else was around. They spent their entire day and night among the phenomenally picturesque nooks along the grounds of Race + Religious in New Orleans, surrounded by their closest friends and family. From the littlest of quiet moments to the unique gifts Charlie and Kayla had for one another, I truly believe the day was perfectly laid out for the two of them.

Charlie and Kayla both exchanged the most heartfelt notes and thought-out gifts. Their attention to detail was truly remarkable to watch as it unfolded throughout the day. Kayla gifted Charlie with an overnight bag packed with all of his most favorite things. Charlie gifted Kayla and her daughters with the sweetest pieces from Tiffany's. My favorite gift though, was the vintage tandem bike Charlie surprised Kayla with during the first look. Their first date involved an adventure on a tandem bike, so we can all go ahead and swoon now...Jennifer Landry Jennifer LandryJennifer Landry

Another fabulous element of Kayla and Charlie's day was the amount of down time they had to truly soak everything in. This is certainly a bonus of having all parts of the day in one location.Jennifer Landry Jennifer LandryJennifer Landry Jennifer LandryJennifer Landry

2015 Favorites | A Year in Review

Unveiled radiance, feminine beauty, motherhood, milestones... As I sit and gather my favorite images from this past year, my heart is abundantly full as I realize the intricate stories each photo tells. Sometimes in our ever-growing social media driven world, I think we truly sometimes lose touch with the authenticity of the raw, genuine struggles, stories, and adventures behind those we encounter, day in and day out.

Admittedly, as I begrudgingly sat down to blog this morning, I was less than enthused--with life, with my creative focus, with where business is headed. Anyone with a creative bone knows well that this is just the ebb and flow that comes with the job--and like anything in life, there are both highs and lows to speak of. However, as I was truly sulking and reflecting negatively on my progress and drive to be new and fresh this morning, I realized through the reflection of these images, that I'm right where I need to be. Connecting with real souls, learning their stories, and authentically documenting that as true and unique as any artist commissioned to create a piece for a buyer. I may not always make the money I hope to or get in every publication I desire, but I've had the wonderful opportunity to document some pretty genuine and stunning moments of life as they unfold in front of me.

It is ever-so-easy within the creative industry to feel lackluster--like your work will never stand out like those you follow and aspire to emulate. But H-E-L-L-O, that's because as ARTISTS, gifted with a sense of creativity, it is our main job to NOT emulate those before us. This is important, so let me say it again: IT IS OUR MAIN JOB. WE ARE ARTISTS. If our talent were to simply emulate or recreate someone else's vision, we could go work in a franchise.

So, I'm sure you're wondering, "Why this soapbox? Did someone steal her ideas? Is she angry?" Not at all. This is simply a reminder to you as much as it is to myself, that art is inconsistent and messy and inherently beautiful--just like life. So embrace the messy as much as the victory as it all contributes to our own little unique vision and story.

And now, enjoy some of my most favorite stories that found themselves in front of my camera this past year...
